How soon you forget Bart. Seems a little while back a certain military officer went on a little shooting spree on base. A place where there's no shortage of weapons or armed personnel.
He went on a rampage with his private gun that he smuggled in from off-base because all of the guns on base were locked up save for those in the possession of the military police, none of whom were immediately present when the shooting commenced.
It's long been an irony of the US armed forces that when the troops are on base and at home they typically have no access to arms.
This policy has proven disastrous in response to attacks back as far as Pearl Harbor where many ammunition lockers were broken open by the troops in order to secure weapons to shoot back at the Japanese. Amazingly, in the aftermath of the Dec. 7th attack several Marines and Army enlisted personnel were brought up on charges for assaulting non-coms and officers who tried to prevent them from accessing weapons without signed orders. General Marshall had all charges dismissed without inquiry upon hearing of them.
And, again, the policy proved disastrous at Fort Hood.
