PENATRATOR PENATRATOR:
I've heard swearing on the radio while on deployment, it is not encouraged, but while you are being mortared and screaming into a radio to some guy safely inside the TOC trying to get fast air or helicopter support to help you with your present situation and he is replying "Say again over....." it can be understood and forgiven.

Totally understandable.

When our chopper pilot crashed a mile from camp he let out a string of profanities on the radio that would make a hells angel blush.
He switched to french for that part.

Ya, that one is wrong or my family member would have been home two weeks ago. A stupid bitch threw an artillery whatchamacallit left instead of straight and almost blew his legs off. He had many choice words for her [bash]

Why is that?
The guy I worked for on the base is a poster here and can comfirm it as he has the same security clearance I do.

So keep digging your hole.

Note to self, don't be a police officer.

Seriously. Is crime in Edmonton so low that we need to worry about this bullshit? We all swear. As long it was something like "Get the fuck down!" Instead of "Get the fuck down, you *insert racial swearword here*", there's nothing to really be concerned about.

They are words, and as long as you don't use said words in an official manner (a police report) or say them so loosely, then who cares?

Yeah.....ok. Did it come with a secret decoder ring, and was the issuing authority Captain Crunch?

I see you point, Commanderkai, but I disagree. Cops can say "Get down" instead of "Get the fuck down". The "f-bomb" isn't needed for emphasis. It's the same as, say, a highschool teacher saying "sit the fuck down" to an unruly student in class. Lawyers don't go into court and say "HE'S FUCKING INNOCENT, your honour." It's called professionalism. If cops want to be taken seriously as credible professionals, they have to act accordingly. When the community hears cops shouting expletives at suspects, it tells them that our law enforcement agencies aren't professionals but goons with no accountability and no respect for their position in society. Cops are supposed to act BETTER than crooks. They're should be held to a higher standard because of their position.

I understand that police get into high stress situations, but that's no excuse to act like a bunch of thugs. Police occupy a position of trust and responsibility in our society and I don't think it's too much to expect that they conduct themselves professionally.

But my point is...they're just words. Yes, police need to be professionals, but people in high stress situations, especially those where your life, or lives of others might be in danger, I'd rather see a police officer be professional in their actions than their words.

Being a pottymouth (can't really think of a better term, as of this moment) isn't acting like a thug, using violence in inproper situations, or harassing civilians/law abiding people is what makes thugs, thugs. If police act like that (and some do, just like there are assholes in other careers) then we should worry.

I think, for example, there's a show called "The First 48" where you see detectives talk normally, and for the most part, they're talking normally, but with a suspect, they at times swear, and it does have some effect.

I understand that they're just words, but, like I said, it's a matter of professionalism. Either cops are professionals or they're not. Professionals don't use profanity in the execution of their jobs. They're expected to act better than the 'average' citizen. If a teacher were swearing in school, or a doctor swore at the hospital, they'd be disciplined by their governing body. Cops should be held to the same standards of professionalism as other professionals, and they should embrace the fact that their positions are positions of trust and respect and act accordingly.

Have you ever been in an ER I've heard some pretty clourful language there from doctors and nurses. The language should be appropriate to the situation.

I admit I'm curious on how you've come to this conclusion? Is this a personal opinion or is it based on some form of legislated fact?

It's common sense. What do you think happens to teachers who swear at students? If I called up the College of Physicians and Surgeons and reported that Doctor X was swearing in the emergency department at the hospital, what do you think would happen to that doctor?

Ah now I understand, it's your opinion.

Really, comparing a cop taking down an armed robber and a doctor checking blood pressure is so very comparable as a basis for your no swearing argument.

Please...
