Brenda Brenda: RUEZ RUEZ: Brenda Brenda: You still don't get the point, do you? This was not a comment about homeless, pain or any other victim. Obviously his comments weren't about the homeless. I don't think Arctic is uncaring. We are merely pointing out that there are thousands of "pussies" in Toronto who's lives will be in danger due to this temperature. So before ripping on Toronto and telling us that Ottawa has it worse think of the people that will actually be affected. They are mentioned right in the article. As we all know, Toronto thinks as itself as the fashion centre of the universe, or at least Canada. People are not dressed for cold temps. Fashion is not made for any other use than to look great. I don't think Arcky was talking about the homeless, when he used the word "pussies", or asked sarcasticly about the coats. I don't think homeless people care a lot about fashion, and I assume Arcky agrees with me on that. What I do think, is that Arcky is right. What is "compassion" for Vancouverites or Torontonians, can have no effect on Ottawanese. Compassion is of no use if you don't practise what you preach, in a usefull way. But hey, what do I know about homelessness or cold temps? I only know in Vancouver hell hardly ever freezes over, so if I have to choose between helping homeless in Vancouver or Ottawa, my help goes to Ottawa. Reason? My coat is warm enough to help one there, while I can go in a sweater in Vancouver.
Brenda, thank you.
You've pretty much nailed what I've been been saying/trying to say right on the head.

$1: That is all we are asking from you.
You are not asking anything from me. Just going on about how cold and inhumane I am... $1: Before you tell us about the "pussies" in Toronto and how Ottawa has it worse think about the people that this weather is really affecting.
I did, but instead of making light of an already well-known problem, I instead got peeved at the "cold alert" for Toronto. The homeless anywhere they are no doubt know how to deal with the cold, but the average citizen in Toronto does not from my experience. $1: How do you know this?
Because unless I'm mistaken, I'm the only person from Ottawa on this board who has lost friends to homelessness which has resulted in their deaths? $1: There are a lot of members here, and a lot of them don't go into detail about what they do outside of here. There might be people here who work every day with the homeless.
I don't doubt that, but they may not be from Ottawa. Also, if they do work with the homeless, don't you think they would be on here by now? Just a thought...

Oh my god lily... -22 without hte windchill is different from +8, isn't it? And I didn't say THEY could get around in just a sweater, I said I could.
And yes, lily, I have been to Vancouver. And, I have lived in a country with the same sea climate for 36 years
What the hell does fashion have to do with anything? Fuckin eh, read his post!
Maybe, just maybe, you should learn how to read between the lines, and not take everything so literally.
I need to get out more? Riiiiiiight... Practise what you preach, sweetheart...

They have cold advisories here when the temperatures drop below 10 C. There are always reports of hypothermia linked deaths, generally the elderly.

I think he meant "sometimes" was a low estimate.
Then his opinion differs from mine too

Arctic_Menace Arctic_Menace: I know more about homelessness and its brutality here in Ottawa than any of you, so before you go pissing on me for my cold outlook on this world, keep in mind the cold shit I've seen and endured in my life. So at this point, how would you feel if someone who has had to endure a tougher life called you a pussy for bringing this up?
Hypothermia can occur at temperatures above freezing. -13C is cold, period, never mind having to sit ouside all day and night, and playing tough guy sitting inside in front of your computer doesn't make you look cool.

I think you are preaching to the wrong one here, BN...
Arcky never denied it, either.

Arcky never denied it, either. As far as I can see, the comments he made in his first post unequivocally deny it.
Albeit, I doubt he'd even read the article at that point.
