BartSimpson BartSimpson: bootlegga bootlegga: $1: But if Canada is looking for some diplomatic peace, nothing short of a public apology will resolve the dispute, Brynen said.
"They want to make an example of us and therefore we would have to do an awful lot of grovelling and apologizing, I think, to get the Saudis to end it," he said. Fuck that noise! Time to add a tariff on all imported goods from Saudi Arabia, including oil. Follow that up with cancelling the LAV deal. Then take all those tariffs and use them for job creation in SW Ontario (to replace any jobs lost due to the LAV cancellation). No, have your limp-dick fellow citizens force Parliament PURCHASE the LAVs for the CF!!! FTFY Politicians aren't to blame for the sad state of the CAF - that falls squarely on the 95% of Canadians who don't give a fuck about whether or not they have decent equipment to do their job. Besides, we've already spent a $1.5 upgrading our existing LAV fleet, based on the lessons we learned in Afghanistan, so while it would be nice, I'd rather see new DDHs, AORs, and fighter aircraft than more LAVs. http://www.forces.gc.ca/en/business-equ ... grade.pageIn an ideal world, we'd get all of the above, but sadly most Canadians want subsidized daycare or more spending on health care than they want new equipment for the CAF.

Thanos Thanos: I know there's a shit load of inoperative ones in a scrap heap somewhere being used for spare parts for those that can still run. After the attrition of Afghanistan I imagine most of the LAVs are also long past due for replacement, which probably got deferred for more important things like another kickback to Bombardier or *ahem* another billion-dollar apology to some group of special someones. Actually, the past two governments spent $1.5 upgrading our existing fleet to the modern standards (LAV 6.0) and the fleet is expected to remain in service until the 2035. http://www.forces.gc.ca/en/business-equ ... grade.page

Jabberwalker Jabberwalker: llama66 llama66: We shall defend our democracy, whatever the cost may be, we shall not apologise on the beaches, we shall not apologise on the landing grounds, we shall not apologise in the fields and in the streets, we shall not apologise in the hills; we shall never apologise.
-Churchill The Brits, by the way, are not backing us in any way shape or form as their asses are so totally owned by the Saudis. I get that, I just thought of the quote as a rebuttal to the Saudi demands for our apology.

DrCaleb DrCaleb: bootlegga bootlegga: Follow that up with cancelling the LAV deal.
Nope, nope, nope! We didn't start this fight, and we aren't going to go back on our word over it. A contract is a contract. It's a shit deal that never should have been signed, but it was signed, and we keep our promises. No, I'm at the point where I think we should tell them to stick all of their business up their ass sideways and simply stop trading with them completely. $4 billion in annual trade isn't all that much in the grand scheme of things and it's time to take a stand against the Saudis. Odds are, if we don't apologize soon, they'll going to cancel it anyways.

We don't have to and shouldn't do jack shit. Other than maybe issue an official statement that as a nation that opposes the death penalty we find beheading and crucifixion especially barbaric. IF we really want to piss the Saudis off even more, which was never the intent in the first place. What we really should do right away is stop fucking Tweeting shit. Twitter's not the goddam medium for diplomacy.

Oldtimers like most of us on CKA can hate on Twitter all they want, but the fact is that social media has replaced Network news/newspapers as the source of news/information that most people use.
