Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Lol, good. I hope they catch the waste of skin.

We need a public bike system.

That's a great idea Mr C. Why don't you start one up by donating your bike! :lol:

A lot of cities in Europe have bike rental places and they seem to do a fairly good business.

I think Seattle has or had one. They took used bikes, fixed 'em up, painted 'em bright yellow including the chain and tires and yer free to take one wherever you need to.
You just leave it there and the next person that might wanna use it just takes it.

Amsterdam, from what I understand had a system like you describe in Seattle, but had to stop it because the bikes just kept getting stolen. Paris has a system where resindents only (ie not tourists) can take out bikes that are locked up - takes a special kind of credit card. The bikes are also different than normal bikes in terms of tire size etc, so less likely to get stolen. I believe the first half hour is free, and then the priced rises steeply the longer you keep it. The idea is just to use it for a quick pedal somewhere.

But bikes are pretty cheap. And places like Our Community Bikes and United We Can in Vancouver refurbish bikes to give cheaply to people who need them. What's mostly needed to get people to bike more is to make the roads more bike friendly for the beginners - way too many car drivers still think they have more right to be on the road than bikes. And we need more enforcement against stupid cyclists who give all bikers a bad name. And we need to legalize drugs to put a dent in the bike thieving business, and to have the cops take bike theft more seriously.

R=UP R=UP

One thing I have wondered about. Canadian Tire sells bikes and the most expensive is about $500. SportMart is even cheaper. I bought my present bike at a yard sale for $15. It was rideable when I got it and did spend several hundred on improvements. Why would someone want a $2000 bike to ride to the store?

Mr_Canada Mr_Canada:
Absolutely agreed.

Wait, people steal bikes for drugs?

I wonder how much?

Addicts steal bikes to sell them for $25 to buy drugs...

It's like with women - you get what you pay for. But having a crapped out model for domestic duties is a good idea, and won't cost you an arm and a leg. But even cheap bikes get stolen or trashed.

I still have a couple of bikes that were 'dumped' in my yard in Edmonton. Both times I reported them to the police. The actual response was " Yah, we'll get right on that"! I advertised them and did everything I could to find the owners. No luck. One is a CCM Revenge-Shimano 21 spd. The other is a Nice looking BMX Freestyle.

All I can say is thank you for making the effort!

When I was a kid, we didn't have much money. I did every little job I could to earn the money to buy one. I close my eyes, and I can still feel, today, as I did the day I rode out of Georges Cycle Shop with my very first bike. A gold Mustang, Ruby Deluxe with all the bells and whistles.
