As usual.. You Conservatives don't understand art. It's a "progressive" domain so "just shut up".

I think it's ignorant to dwell of something like this being left or right. Where the distinction really enters is when the cost is mentioned. Just as most of us agree that "voice of fire" is not worth the $1.8 Million, I question the value of this statue. I would have been far more comfortable to have put up a huge wall and let school kids paint on it.

Not all conservatives, but a lot. I think--generally speaking--the like representational art--realism. And they enjoy art that has been around long enough to no longer be too challenging. After all, the conservatives aren't out burning Beatle albums any more.

Rather than even attack that broad generalization, I'd say the difference is rooted in the cost of things. I believe the majority of Conservatives enjoy a wide variety of art just as much as anyone else but their less comfortable to spend taxpayers money to do it.

I found the site for this group and some of their art is interesting but the 8 stop signs in Vanier is a joke. The stainless steel chairs on Kitsilano Beach Park also don't make the grade either.

The word "conservative" is a broad generalization to start with, so it seems perverse to call me to task for making broad generalizations about a broad generalization. And to my credit I've provided a rationale based on typical conservative values, a peer-reviewed study showing that conservatives prefer representational art more than abstract art, and an article from a popular conservative magazine demonstrating my point.

All-in-all another stellar display of debating prowess by me, I'll have to humbly admit. Really, you can't do much except stand in awe of my scintillating intellect and rapier wit.

As a conservative,

I'd like to plug a local artist that I support, I have a few of his pieces.
If your ever in Ottawa drop buy buy some of his fantastic work, reasonable prices.
They aren't originals but very high quality reproductions.

The problem most conservatives have is not art at all, and this is where you miss the point. We might not enjoy, or even "understand" abstract art, but our issue is how abstract art is created, and commonly the stories that are posted are paid for by taxpayer dollars.

I, for one, as an "artist" myself (a writer, but literature can still be as much an art form as anything else) have absolutely no qualms about people expressing their artistic desire. But, the problem is, and my problem is that these pieces of art are paid for with hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of taxpayer money. That is a waste. My issue is artist welfare. I have no issue with funding museums (who then can buy abstract art, or whatever else, to the desire of the curators and patrons of said museum) or funding of art programs and schools. Funding the artist is giving them a blank check to create ANYTHING. This includes a literal pile of trash (as seen in another example of this on this site).

If abstract art can only survive through government funding, and not by wealthy liberals purchasing said art (thus giving the artist funds to create another piece), then there is a problem.

Like you, I'm not in favour of giving artists a blank cheque to create anything. I have no problem with some public money being used for art and culture. Museums, public art displays, etc. Not much public money, but some. In line with what amateur athletics gets, perhaps.

If abstract art can only survive through government funding, ... then there is a problem.

You mean like the banks? Sorry, had to throw that in. I'm a writer too incdentally. Speculative fiction short stories mostly. Took the year off. My New Year's Resolution is a novel this year. No government funding though!

Happy New Year to you Commander!

Be hard for a bust to hug a bunny as a bust has no arms.
