BartSimpson BartSimpson: bootlegga bootlegga: The key word in that statement is group, not media. That's irrelevant. If a Boy Scout troop is acting in the capacity of a news organization then their right to gather and cover news is protected. The freedom of the press was never intended to be a special right reserved to a special class of people. Rather it is akin to the freedom of speech in that it is a protected activity. Regardless of who acts in the capacity of the media it is the activity itself that is protected. Unless of course you think that politicians and civil servants should have prior approval over who gets to cover them...just like we see in no end of shithole dictatorships around the world. Anyone can show up at an event in a public place and cover it. This was different, as Caleb's post showed. Going to embargoed events (like last week's event or the budget release) is very different from showing doing something in a public place. I don't know about elsewhere, but here in Alberta, the media gets a copy of the budget 4-6 hours before it is made public, so that they can draft whatever news items they want for their news organization. The only catch is you have to be accredited media to get into those events - they don't let in bloggers or citizens (as Sheila Gunn Reid refers to herself) or average joes.

Alta_redneck Alta_redneck: DrCaleb DrCaleb: That said, the "Rebel" media sure do seem to have a hate on for the Alberta NDP. So much that they'll post blatant lies to try to create some sort of scandal. Reminds me a lot of groups like "Americans for Prosperity" which don't really do what they pretend to do.
Refresh my memory on all these lies. Well, recently, there was that piece they published that the Government of Alberta had hired 47,000 people while the rest of the province went without jobs. There was that fake 'man in the street' interview. There is contempt of court for posting information under pardon from a judge. Then bullshit like '10 million' to 'redecorate' 24 Sussex, when it's for repairs, not new artwork. And on and on . . . People don't realize that a free and unbiased media is entrenched in the Constitution because it's important for a functioning Democracy for the people to be informed. When the media lies to the people for monetary reasons, it undermines our democracy. It's no different than if its Ezra or any other media organization.

The Rebel and the NDP, why not to provoke Ezra Levant http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ezra-le ... -1.3452671$1: Notley was told in pretty clear terms that defining journalists and excluding the ones you don't like are unacceptable.
Fairly quickly, she backed down. Banning Levant was "a mistake," her office said in a statement. A retired veteran wire service reporter was asked to review the whole matter and report back.
All to the good. Levant is a journalist if he says he's one, and he does.
Mind you, it would have been wonderful to hear him raise his fearless voice in defiant criticism when Stephen Harper's underlings were gagging public servants, shutting down access for journalists, controlling questioning at news conferences and generally making Notley's crew seem like amateurs.
But then, there's nothing that says a journalist has to be consistent, either.

That's a very regressive policy in an age when anyone can become a member of the media simply by having a camera and a web page. Example: Matt Drudge might not be an accredited member of the media but anyone fucking with him is going to discover that he's got a bigger audience than many major media outlets combined. Sorry, but I don't agree with the government getting prior approval over who covers their activities and any government that does this kind of thing deserves to be overthrown before they get too full of themselves.

Now there is a Bart quote for the ages! Mind if I archive it for later "use?"

Sorry, but I don't agree with the government getting prior approval over who covers their activities and any government that does this kind of thing deserves to be overthrown before they get too full of themselves. But having a free press is an important part of a democracy. At what point does government regulation as to who or what constitutes a 'journalist' start to become state control of the media? $1: Journalists entertain all sorts of self-aggrandizing notions about what we do.
The big one is that we are a profession, which we pretty clearly are not. We don't even really qualify as a trade.
Professions generally have minimum qualifications. You need a degree in accounting to be an accountant, for example.
And a tradesman, like a mechanic, or a furnace installer, requires a licence — something to prove you can actually do the job.
Not a journalist. Journalists don't even have to finish high school.
Professions also tend to regulate themselves.
If lawyers or doctors or pharmacists breach the clear ethical rules governing them, they can be formally charged and punished by their peers.
The car mechanic or furnace installer can lose his licence.
But regulating journalism? Out of the question, for the sake of democracy itself, my peers would argue.
There are no national journalistic standards, and no way to enforce them if they existed.
Journalists can root through people's garbage, mislead interview subjects to gain their confidence, appoint themselves arbiters of people's privacy, and decide whose story is worth public consideration, and whose isn't — the only people we answer to are our bosses.
Most of us do try to tell the truth, but let's be clear: there isn't any law or regulation that says we even have to do that. Some big organizations have codes of conduct, others don't. Such rules as do exist are often interpretable. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/ezra-le ... -1.3452671

Oh man! So, you were just talking shit, and have no evidence to back up your assertions. The only one talking shit is you, the CBC is evidence enough and your response is typical hypocrosy. Surprise Rachel Notley caved and ended up on her knees faster than Monica Lewinsky. Look forward to the Rebel Media holding the NDP accountable, it will drive lapdogs like you crazy. Cheers! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif)

Cheers! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif) I haven't written anything here that I haven't backed up. I've show that The Rebel isn't a news organization, it's a gossip rag on par with TMZ. And the first thing I posted here was a condemnation for Notley for banning the Ezra in the first place, of you'll recall. "The Rebel" is not holding the NDP accountable, like a responsible news organization would. Ezra posts bullshit about StatsCan data that doesn't exist, and changes headlines into clickbait. He's lying about them to solicit advertising revenue and donations from people who are too stunned to know it just goes to pay his expenses when he gets sued for libel. And loses. Again. And you repeat Ezra's tired shtick by making claims that you know you can't back up! ![Drink up [B-o]](./images/smilies/drinkup.gif) Insulting me isn't going to change your bad decision on posting bullshit. Put up, or shut up there Kemosabe. Show us these "lies" the CBC has posted about the Conservatives. I'm sure we'd all like to hold them accountable for it.

Don't worry I understand you can say anything negative about the Fuhrer. Media critics of the Rebel stood up for their rights while you supported censorship of the press that doesn't fit your political narrative, hypocrite.

bootlegga bootlegga: Sorry, I'm not buying it and IMHO, the NDP shouldn't have either.
But they did, didn't they. There should be a new reality show women of the NDP, fashioned after the House Wifes of,....... series. They all get together and make themselves look stupid and then spend the next day backtracking and apologizing.

Maybe I'm misinterpreting, but isn't this exactly what Rebel supporters are saying? And isn't it what you've been disagreeing with?
