Direct election of the heads of parts of state government allows for direct accountability.

The problem these days is that California is effectively a one-party state so the choices on the ballot range from union-owned Democrats to union-owned Democrats. :?

Clearly that system doesn't work.

And going back to the spoils system would just make the corruption more efficient.

Why go back to anything? Why not copy models that work? We don't have that problem and I'm sure there are many other countries that don't either. Seems there's a mentality there that feels theres nothing wrong.

The problem isn't the structure of our government. The problem is that the state is a one-party state where an assortment of statewide and local Democrat political machines dominate. Any model of government would be twisted and perverted by these people.

Oh so the problem isn't the government structure ............it's the government structure. Ok. I get what you mean now. Again, maybe your people need to look at other models that work better. That way education doesn't turn into left vs right penis envy.

The best solution we've had in California to the problems with education have included publicly subsidized charter schools.

The Hmong community runs a public charter in South Sacramento at a closed public elementary school and they've been both a great success and a most welcome addition to the community. The kids are uniformly quiet and polite and they keep the campus immaculately clean and the landscape is well manicured. Absent the charter school the empty buildings would be a blight and an eyesore.

The mayor of Sacramento, Kevin Johnson, is himself both a Democrat and the sponsor of Sacramento Charter High School that is doing outstanding things in a low-income community. A couple years ago the teacher's union ran a pogrom against him accusing him of a raft of vile things that the Federal government finally cleared him of. All of the accusations were retaliatory and false.

Why'd they do this?

Because he's putting the better-funded 100% public schools to shame.

At this point the teacher's unions are fighting a losing battle but it's still a battle.

Isn't that because PEOPLE vote for them. Perhaps they see the jackass party as bad but not as bad as the pachyderms
