It's getting ever more important to look for "Made in Canada" labels. And failing that, "Made in U.S.A.".
This. My maple syrup either comes from Canada or Vermont and I never buy that flavored corn syrup crap that seems to be so popular down here.
You just can't beat the real thing for taste. And of course no artificial flavourings or additives.
I live in a maple bush area, so if I look around I can get a good price on maple syrup. Last time, I picked up a 1 gallon jug of No.1 medium for $40. That goes a long way.
I don't like to buy Far East foodstuffs and stay away from them as much as I can. If I can't buy Canadian I'll buy US by second choice or European by third. The only common exception is bananas from Central America.
We've got Chinese garlic in our grocery stores dirt cheap, but I won't touch it. I try to stock up on locally grown garlic during the summer. If I run low, I'll buy American, even though it's twice as expensive as Chinese.
