Meh,

I can introduce you to more than a few Albertans that are inspirational geographers as well.

In modern times, people are becoming technology dependant. Why learn and memorise when you can look it up in half a second?

Albert Einstein once said , "never memorize something you can look up."

Work smart, not hard.

I can't even imagine knowing friends or other classmates who would get questions like that wrong. From what I remember, we weren't able to pass fifth grade without being able to label all of the states and capitals. Then for eight grade it was all of the countries in the world. I know the statistics of "X amount of population can't find ___ place on a map" are just an average, but I wonder where these people are from. Because not even the dumbest kids in my classes would be that stupid.

I don't know where this map is from and how accurate it is, but maybe this explains it?
Wisconsin is OK at something?

Yes there is love, but don't let it get to your head. You're still behind Australia. They have Utes.

So would we if they'd offer them for sale. Lot of us own JDMs brought in under the import rules (have to be 15 years old), I'm tempted to look into bringing in containers full of Aussie utes. I think they'd be big sellers in rural Canada.

I'm not a big fan of asking kids in school to memorize everything but... the more you use it, especially at a young age, the better it gets. I'd rather kids have an interest and be good at researching stuff. Knowledge of basic geography along with a historical time line are good things.

Memorizing dates/places is useless IMHO - and this comes from someone who majored in History and has an excellent grasp of geography.

What's far more important is knowing why an evnt is significant/important - it's useless to know the dates for the US Civil War if you don't understand why it was fought and the effects the war had on subsequent events.

Memorizing is exercise for the brain. It's something we should all do, not for the storage of facts, but for the health of the mind.

Again, I'll turn to Albert Einstein, who said something along the lines of, "Reading does for the mind what exercise does for the body."

There's been lots of good medical research since Einstein's day. There's plenty of research that supports the value of memorization as brain-exercise. It's a prescribed activity for most diagnosed with Alzheimer's. The ceremonies that we do in a masonic lodge are all done from memory and it's pretty impressive to see the old boys doing their memory work at Lodge meetings. I'm sold on memory work as a preventative measure in keeping the Alzheimer's at bay...er...what was it we were talking about again?

You could turn that around and say the closer they get to Mexico they stupider they get, but that would be racist.

I'd be careful.

Barry's home states average doesn't exactly fit the mensa requirements either.
