Physical Education.

(the thing you have to change into gym clothes for, and play basketball or just throw balls at each other in the gym
Or even go on a class walk outside for an hour, like my kids do 3 times a week)

Brenda Brenda:

Because most of them will never grow up to play music anyway. Nothing wrong with music classes, I just don't consider them essential. PE, I do.

Why?
They have recess to "mingle" and "learning to be with kids".

(I agree with you PE is essential, but I also think music and sex ed are essential. I would even go as far as personal hygiene classes to be essential)

In addition, most of them won't grow up using biology (for example), but it is still taught.

Sex ed - essential, hygiene, essential. I don't see music in the same way.

Why not? I do, just because I think it is good to have as much common knowledge as you can. Music plays a HUGE part in peoples lives, always has, and I think it's a good thing that kids learn how to play an instrument. I wish I had gotten the music classes my kids get now. I never had the opportunity to play guitar, or sax. My kids do.

I'm not arguing against music classes, Brenda. I think they're a great idea. Music has been shown to further brain development, it makes you smarter. It's all good. I'm just saying that I wouldn't force the little Muslim kids to take it, like I would with PE and sex-ed.

And I wonder about the why of that?
What's so special about "little muslim kids"?

You don't get to pick and choose the curriculum taught to your kids in school. I don't, you don't, they don't. Period.

Grade school is the best time for students to be involved in phys-ed, music AND art classes. Chances are, nearly everyone will have some level of aptitude in any of those three classes. Once they hit high school, they can then concentrate on one of them to make sure they have enough arts credits to graduate. Dunno if it still is but, phys-ed was lumped in with music and art when it came to arts credits when I was in HS.
But there's really no sense in limiting a kid's "artistic" potential when they are being educated here.

Aw shit, I was just trying to throw them a bone. If the issue was just about music, I would say fine, let em sit it out. But since there's other issues, I hope the board stays strong and makes em take the same stuff as everybody else.

A dozen Muslim families who recently arrived in Canada

Go right ahead. You get a zero in the class. Problem solved.
