Choban Choban: Hate to say it, I agree that leaving a $2400 bike unlocked is just asking to have it stolen, Brenda, it's not even close to the same as rape because of a skirt. Though it seems they have a really good picture of this guy so dumb crook will be caught as well. I've had 3 bikes stolen, 1 when I was a kid and 2 as an adult, all 3 times they were locked up and cheap bikes, people will steal anything, the days of leaving things unlocked even in a small community are long gone. Oh really? How so? An unlocked bike "deserves" to be stolen? What the fuck of an attitude is that?? How come that attitude is not close to rape a woman because she "was wearing a skirt/was on the street at 2 am/provoked with her body"? Same attitude... Its the "I want what is not mine, and I am going to get it because you are stupid"-attitude.

Don't look to the cops for help. In Vancouver we had the case of a bike being stolen in one jurisdiction, and the owner tracing it to another. The police force where the bike was found said it wasn't their problem, since it was stolen in another jurisdiction, while the police where the bike was stolen said they could do nothing, since it was no longer in their jurisdiction. Guess the victim didn't offer enough donuts to our finest to get some action.

rickc rickc: Damn most of the cars I've owned aren't worth $2400.Still I can't stand a thief.I think the rule of thumb is anything over $1000 is grand theft, and considered a felony.A felony conviction, and some time in the grey bar motel could be the attitude adjustment this punk needs. That brings to mind something I thought of before. Theft over a $1000 is considered a felony because of the amount of money involved right? How long ago was that law inacted? Taking into account inflation, is theft over $1000 dollars still serious enough to warrant a felony? What would be the equivalent of a $1000 at the time the law was enacted in todays dollars?

Notice please I did not say "deserves", I said they were asking for it and clarified my point when I said the days of leaving goods aroung unlocked are long gone, Rape is a much more serious crime than theft under 5k, no one deserves to be raped. Your right when you say the attitude is similar, but it's also very different, a rapist usually wants control over his victim or there are underlying phsycological issues, this bike theft was a crime of opportunity where said theif saw an unlocked bike and took it (note that I know rape can and often is a crime of opportunity as well, but we are still looking at two very different crimes) I would say the same if some guy left his keys in his running car and came back to find it gone, he asked for it by not taking precautions to prevent it, yet if you look at the last big news rape here in Calgary, she was a middle aged immigrant woman (not particuarily sexy either)on her way home from work, she did nothing to provoke the attack on her, was dressed for -30 weather and still fell victim to a sico drunk drug addict and was raped and killed. Comparing the two circumstances just doesn't add up to me.

You know, this could be an example for the "SHOPPING WITH GUNS" thread. Wouldn't it be wonderful for our society if some bystander had been packing heat and on observing the theft, had blasted a 15 year old bike stealing punk to hell. Wow, I would feel safer.

The guy in the pic certainly didn't look 15. I'm anti-gun, but I gotta say, if any argument that packing heat crowd makes that would get me to join them it would be that I could blow away bicycle thieves.

Yeah, but if someone back in '92 had plugged him with a .45 none of this would have happened. Really though, I know what you mean. When my bike was stolen, even though it was only worth a couple of hundred, I was very upset. I had that bike fixed the way I liked it and unlike my wife, it did what I wanted, when I wanted.
