Metis are half Native, half European, right? (according to the story)... I think that said it all :)

Almost makes one wish that the original "genocide" had actually been successful.

Isn't that a wee bit rash?

The Metis are half native and half French or English which makes them no more First Nations than I am.

They are, to use an American term 'half breeds'. There I said it so I am waiting for the big "R" word to pop up.

I am sick and tired of all of these idiotic lawsuits that try to make me feel guilty for something that happened before Canada even existed and that myself or my distant relatives had anything to do with. This is nothing more than a group of people that are utilizing their perceived entitlement that has passed down from generation to lazy generation. Enough is enough already!

My understanding is that Alaska gave every native person alive at a certain point in time $100,000, and that extinguished all claims. I'd like to see Canada do something like that - a one time payment (a reasonable one) and that's the end of it. Take aboriginals out of the constitution as having special status, declare that all claims were extinguished with the confederation of Canada and move on.

They'd spend it all in one shot on liqour and KD, then sue for more money.

andyt. Haven't we as taxpayers given in enough. Housing, social programs, education, and the list goes on. This one time payment would be similar to the payouts given to the Residential School students. They would blow it simply because some other lawyer would be willing to start the sh*t all over again. As long as grandpa tells little junior that he/she is entitled to special treatment because they were here first the circle will just keep going and going.

Plus the corrupt chiefs would never give in or accept a one time payment because it would release the stranglehold they have on their own people.

They can spend it however they like, but as I said, that would be it. They can sue, but the law would state so sorry, no mo money.

Believe me, compared to what we will continue to pay, with land claims settlements (and natives not agreeing to extinguishment clauses, so even settled claims will always be revived) this would be a bargain.

Of course it will never happen, because it would take the whole nation being behind it to force it thru, and fuck the chiefs.

As to what they blow it on, that's up to them.

The whole problem with a one time payment is we would never, never get 100% acceptance. All it would take is one band to say that the amount wasn't enough and that would kill it.

The chiefs would never give up the control of the reserves and would never allow their membership to accept it.

Hell, in Manitoba there is a small reserve that has a chief that makes a 6 figure salary over and above a massive travel allowance that gets paid every month whether they use it or not.

I am getting to the point that I think we should refuse to pay taxes so the feds can piss it away to a group of people that think they are special and entitled. They want the land back, fine! I want every penny that was paid to them in lieu of the lands. Who would go broke first?
