How could a map like the 1860 map have been made in 1860?

Because there were more trees, that meant there were some really, really tall ones. The cartographers of the day did their work from atop these giants.

For all those geniuses out there who really think its just Liberal bullshit that we need to replace the forests we`re gutting, take a peek at the forests of the Pacific Northwest on Google Earth.`

All them little pale spots aren`t old growth.

I'm as Tory and right-wing as the next con but I have never seen looking after our planet as 'liberal bullshit'.

Replant those forests and fight pollution, clear-cutting, the rape of the oceans, the wiping out of thousands of species of animals and plants.

I'm also willing to believe in climate change as a reality. I'm just not buying the GW/Carbon trading cultist BS.

Ditto, I'm a tree hugger but I still don't buy into the AGW bullshit.

Was not refering to your post, was aimed at Hyack's previous post.

Are you purposely being self centered?

Wow.

It's a balloon shot from a Royal Engineers hot-air balloon at 50,000 feet, circa 1861.
Officer Commanding the balloon was Major Ponsonby-Smythe RE, other crew were Colour Sergeant Peter Rickhead and Sapper Wrapper, with a Royal Naval observer, Seaman Staines. They were using a Gordon Tail-board camera.

The Sappers were equipped with a long pipe to suck in oxygen from 5000 feet. Staines was tragically lost giving his life to ensuring the balloon remained at altitude.

Obviously the original shot was touched up in a very early PS program called 'Photographic and Lithograph touche-uppe Shoppe'. I think they did a good job getting the colour in from the old sepia plates.

All this is available on wiki-pedia you know?

Truth be told there are more trees now than there were when the Europeans arrived. But we are led to believe the oppisite.

Oh sure that makes sense. There's more trees after cutting as many of them down as you can than before. Sure. Remove trees=more trees. Yeah I get that.

we are led to believe that the lumber companies want to strip the earth of all trees. Yeah that would be smart THEY WOULD BE OUT OF WORK! AND THEN CANT MAKE MONEY!

Yeah that's like fishermen running out of fish or mines running dry. Never happens.

I see. So in other words you haven't the foggiest notion about your statement there were less trees then than now, and you realize there's really no way to remotely prove that since absolutely no one back then was counting trees.

If you read the other posts I already admitted I was wrong, and meant to say there are more trees now in North America then 100 years ago. I also supplied links to prove it.
