$1:
Nissan has said the price of the Leaf will likely be about $30,000.

Ouch. 30 G's for something the size of a Mazda3 that can't make it from to Toronto to Niagara Falls and back without staying overnight. No thanks.

I might be interested if the range indicated I could drive to and from work without running out of battery power. 160 km... nope not enough.

Any cold weather tests done on this thing?

Not as cold as it gets in most of the country. West of the rockies has rather mild winters.

Right now Vancouver is +2... and I am -26.

Good Lord! You commute over 160 Km's one way to work every day?! You must have a microwave, hot plate and mini-fridge set up in your back seat. :D

Brenda Brenda:
I wonder what happens with the battery when its life has ended. Within about 5 years... How "clean" will that be taken care of?

good question.

as with most car batteries, we(society) are fortunate that our rate of recycling is much higher than consumer used batteries that go into TV remotes and children's toys.

But what happens with a truck load of lithium ion batteries? Thats a good quest, I'll be Googling that on one of my breaks this week.

I'd much rather have an electric car than a muscle car ( the techie side of me is winning)

however, because small cars, any small car, do not replace the practicality of my pick up truck...I would be carrying the cost of 2 vehicles instead of 1. I'm not inclined to buy a 30K vehicle when a 5k used Honda civic is fairly economical and environmentally friendly, too.

Not one way, roughly 160KM there and back. I work 12's so I could plug the car to charge while I am at work... if the company hadn't worked the parking lot outlets so that anything that draws more power than a blockheater kills power to the outlet.

I'm considering the Volt, the gas generator makes all the difference to me.

Saturn, you might be ok.

A block heater must draw close to a full 15 amps, and since you wont be needing an oil sump for an electric motor, the 15 amps could be redirected towards a battery charging system. 80kms each way is not that bad.

I'd consider an electric minivan. I average 30kms a day including service calls.
There's be a few days of real cold, but my F150 on propane won't start those days either so it's no big deal. I'd only need to drive 1.5kms to the office and plug in again.

Regardless, I don't have the 30G to spare right now.
