OldChum OldChum:
Why also is it that the British Explorers always figured they were out to change the world and rename it in their country's honour .

Because they were, and they did.

For Queen and Country.

I don't see an issue with this. As Xerxes said, it has been called Gwaii for centuries.

Half these names given by Brit/US/French/Spanish/Italian explorers were done as these guys passed through, never to return.

It was all about bag-licking the royalty of the day, who would never see the bit of land named after them.

The Haida were calling the Queen Charloettes Haidi Gwaii for a long time before any white boy found them. BFD.
Haida Gwaii is what everyone I know have been calling it for at least 20 years.

50/50. No massive grief calling it Haida Gwaii.

Meh. Doesn't bother me. "Queen Charlotte" never even saw these isles.

I'm pretty sure 'Vancouver' and 'Toronto' have native backgrounds to the names so no biggie to me.

EDIT: Brain fart. Obviously not 'Vancouver'. :) but you know what I mean.

Who cares? I mean really, come on already. That name has been used for a long time already.

Brilliant move. They can't drill, mine or log if they can't find it on a map. :D
Seriously, if it advances native treaties and gets them working with us, instead of against us, they can call it whatever they like.

All it does is have "us" (Canadians) being forced to pay "them"(Indians) money when we want to develop our(Canadian)land. While they sit back and bitch that they aren't getting a big enough cut of our work. Meaning that instead of money going to Canadians is goes to very select group of people based on their race.

The problem is you think it is your land when it really is not. Read the part of the article where it says the Natives have been living there for thousands of years and never signed a treaty surrendering the land.

No one asked them if they wanted to be Canadians. You might as well claim Alaska and see how many of them like it when you call their state a province.

It 'aint your land either. You guys signed it away because you couldn't or wouldn't fight to protect it.

You lost.

??? I don't think Donny is claiming Haida gwaii for himself. And if the Haida didn't sign treaty, how did they "sign it away?"

Sorry bud, but this area was not signed away, there were no treaties covering this land, as with most of BC.

Do you think the governments are signing treaties now because they feel charitable and are ignorant like yourself?

No, they are signing treaties because they are required to do so under law to account for the land that they occupy.

If you would have read the article you would know that.
