saturn_656 saturn_656: If I were to run in race, and come in 15th, I wouldn't say I was near the top.
Call me when we hit the top ten list then I will be impressed. Who cares where we rank? What matters is whether we can provide the level of defense we need. I'd rather finish 54th in a marathon than 2nd in a fist-fight.

PENATRATOR PENATRATOR: llama66 llama66: I'd love to see us develop and actually build our our own class of SSN subs and acquire at least 2 Aircraft Carriers and perhaps add one or two new destroyer and frigate classes. but yeah The military really is no longer the joke that it was before. I wonder what Armoured Fighting Vehicle we are looking at now...is it still the CV90? The navy does not have enough guys to sail all of their present ships. Easy enough then, Mr. Freakinoldguy will have to come out of possible retirement for this.

It's just a pinky attempt to say that we are spending way too much on defence when in reality we are hovering between 'just enough' and 'not enough'. We are in a war. We also are having to deploy the CF for the Olympics, the G8 and the G20, while fighting said war. All these deployments for domestic security are coming out of the defence budget and are draining resources from training operational readiness. But no pinky 'think tank' would look at that. Far easier to just slag off the CF and blab about how badly we treat prisoners.

The larger issue, in terms of funding, is the immeasurable bureaucratic waste that's suckling at the government teet. The CF wouldn't need to be the whipping boy at budget time if we started to make the hard decisions on spending that ought to be made. Wasn't Uncle Stevie looking to spend like a drunken sailor last spring? Well, he should have spent his drunken sailor's cash on, well, drunken sailors. Why didn't the stimulus money, all of it, get thrown into our military? At least we'd have something to show for it, instead of a bunch of worthless GM stock.

Just thought I would throw this it out there.... A. Cohen wrote a great book about our military decline and slip from or original world reputation etc. I read it and it is an interesting read and relates a bit to this topic...could be a good stocking stuffer for a few of you posters http://www.chapters.indigo.ca/books/Whi ... +lost%2527

When we've got nukes come talk to me. Otherwise we're in the sandbox with the other toddlers.

I agree but procurement has always been mired in federal and provincial politics. It's easy to say cut out the pen pushers but it never seems to get done by either political side. The civil servants just seem to have too much power.

The "Center for Policy Alterntives" looks only to the left for their alternative policy. Good homework getting those numbers and sending her a letter too. I'm sure the reporter will see the error of her ways and send back a good, rousing, patriotic reply.

It just shows how shit most journalists are. They don't even do the basics in checking out facts in a story they write. The media haven't been less credible for decades. Lazy and politically biased plonkers.

It's group think. "Everybody knows" we spend too much on the military so there was no need to even look at the numbers. All it needed was for someone to say the words and that's enough for a nice big headline. Since most people just read headlines, that further pushes the agenda. Total absolute shit but we all know far to many voters who don't know shit.

Nice way to twist the numbers aound to show a result that fits someones personal agenda. So we're the 6th highest spenders in Nato whch loosely translates in to us spending more than countries such as Latvia, Estonia,Iceland and such. Never mind where we are compared to other nations who aren't members of Nato and why bother comparing where we are on spending as a % of GDP. Kathleen must be trying to get a job with the CBC.

Fact is the spending is needed, after so many years of cuts and losses and neglect it's about time we spent on a military that will be able to do the job, any one of us who have served or been involved with the military knows what a shit show our forces have been through, sadly it took a major war to make these things happen, lets just hope theres no backslide when we finally pull out of A-stan Rain and Brock are bang on about the Journalists as well, thanks for shedding the light.
