I know that. I just don't see the general public in 2009 interested in joining. They want to work in the IT world or behind a desk. I don't know anywheres that pays someone $32,000 a year to start with only a grade 10 education. I cannot understand why people don't flock to the Recruiting centres? It is crazy.

This is pretty funny to read. Everyone has a great idea to improve recruiting. Maybe instead of being on here, go to your local recruiting centre and join...That might help. LMAO Or you can check out the forces.ca web page and see if there are any jobs you guys here would like. I know after 22 yrs in the Navy, I am pretty comfortable saying, there are jobs available today for you guys to join the Navy. I know for sure there is....I know a few recruiters and they cannot find qualified people because of the education levels required to join some of the Trades that are hurting....The failure rate in training is crazy high because of the level of education required. Also, basic training isn't as easy as some people think and the voluntary releases are really hit because people don't like to be told what to do, they just want to get paid.....

Gee, I'll rush right down and join up,

I wonder if they'd let me keep my pension from the first go round?

Perhaps you shouldn't go around assuming all people on these boards have their head up their ass and never drew the Queens Crown, because that'd be a big misconception on your part.

It is hard to recruit new people when the Navy is the one branch that is always seen-off when it comes to new equipment purchases because it is also the most expensive.

With the current recession and the cost of labour being what it is they should be building new ships now to show perspective recruits that the Navy has a strong future, the newest large Ship in the fleet is already 12 years old.

I have to go, but as former members, you should be our best recruiters...Sell everyone you know, your experience. And if I offended anyone that hasn't taken a shot at me, I apologize. It wasn't to piss you off, I was only trying to defend the Recruiting world......... :(

Freakinoldguy Freakinoldguy:
What they really need to do is stop this elitist recruiting crap. At one time the Navy, and I know the Army to, relied on societies problem children to fill out the ranks and the court system was more than happy to oblige them.

It may take longer to train a person if he just came out a court room vice a university, but he is still trainable and you wouldn't be competing with every other high tech industry for his services.

If you give a person a second chance he's gonna be alot more attentive to his duties, training and career than some guy who's got a myriad of job opportunites, that he can fall back on if he doesn't like the Military.

This system worked in the past and we got alot of good sailors that way, who made the Navy their career. The only drawback I can see is if you take these types of people you have to be able to discipline them and given the current state of discipline in the Military you might have a problem with some who are incorrigable.

So to alleviate the disicpline problem, have the Military exempted from the Charter of Rights and Freedoms and go back to the pre 1982 version of Military discipline.

Problem solved.

Very well stated.

It's not just IT or desk jobs. In many provinces, jobs in forestry, the oilpatch and/or mining also provide very lucrative careers with little formal education. Other good paying trade type jobs (like plumbing, welding, electricial, etc) can be obtained with only minimal school work as most of the knowledge is acquired on the job, not in the classroom.

Rome had a similar problem and we all know how that turned out. Once citizens are not willing to make sacrifices for their society, it invariably falls. I fear that could be the West's fate in a few decades (a century at the most). We need some hard times for people to realize that life isn't just about being able to buy giant TVs and big cars.

Out of my crew of forty, seven are first generation Canadians. An intersting average these days.
