It would get people out of cars, just not everyone. Like I said, with the rental of a small car when you get there (put a rental car office right in each station, just like the Via station here in Edmonton), it would attract some people.

But the issue is, will it attract enough? Would a light rail system be more efficient and used more than a bullet train system. If the studies support the former, those "some people" will have to deal with their vehicles for a little while longer.

Given the popularity of WestJet flights (several each day) and Red Arrow buses (4-5 each business day, and a couple on the weekends) between Edmonton and Calgary, and given the fact that they each take almost 3 hours to go between destinations, I pretty much guarantee it would have a market.

$50 one way to Calgary sounds expensive, but if you drive a minivan, SUV or pick-up, you are not saving much by driving, and it would take three times as long.

As we have been told many times, time = money.

I know I would prefer to take a train to Calgary in an hour, rather than drive for almost three, but maybe that is because my wife refuses to do any highway driving. A train or bus ride is also a great way to get some extra work done while travelling.

Exactly and if the train goes from airport to airport I think less will make the same flight as well. It will be cheaper and more reliable and probably quicker since there won't be security and pre-boarding check in waits. On one of my trips to Edmonton it stopped in Calgary for a connecting flight which was a total of 3 hours flight time included. I rented a car in Calgary and drove. Since I didn't have to wait for baggage I probably saved myself another half hour.

$50 is way too much though.

Given that Red Arrow charges $67 for a one way trip to Calgary that takes at least three hours, I would say it is cheap by comparison.

Hell, even a ticket on cheapo Greyhound costs $42-48 one-way (unless you are a student, in the CF, or eligible for some other discount).

Doesn't really matter anyways, Eddie quashed the idea of a high speed link the other day. He stated that light innercity transit is far more of a priority for the time being which makes sense.
