Could have had a completely different outcome though. But cudos to him for doing what he did.

Typical response from Crappy Tire.

I worked at Chevron in Texas and plenty of times stopped robbers and gas thieves.

Good for the employee for taking a stand and stopping the robber, a true Canadian, not just standing by and watching it happen.. [B-o]

I can't believe people are siding with Crappy Tire on this. 8O Have we sunk so low as to just bend over and let criminals do whatever they want? The man should have been congratulated and given a raise for his actions.

Anyone who thinks he got what he deserved should give their heads a shake. It's partly due to those attitudes that criminals have no fear. They know that average Canadians will just hand over everything. Pathetic.

I have a different perspective. A sister of a friend was randomly shot and killed by a shotgun blast to the stomach in direct response to a single douchebag customer who refused to give his wallet to the gang robbing the cafe they were in.

This is 2009, not 1889. Insurance takes care of the loss, and police are fairly good at investigating and catching robbery suspects.

This dumbass deserved to be fired. We need less cowboy action, and more reason.

Right in the criminal code of canada, there are provisions that allow for a citizen's arrest that extend the same rights and priveledges of a police officer to anyone that chooses to perform a citizen's arrest.

I guess it's OK to fire a police officer for apprehending a 2 bit hood that robs a gas station.

Police are granted the right, training, and are subject to extraneous laws we aren't.

Comparing some daft gas jockey to a police officer is insulting.

$1:
He told a female customer to lock herself in the washroom

He put that woman's safety at risk. For that I would fire him.

I re-read the article, and I would agree that if he put a woman's safety at risk, then that was reckless and irresponsible.

However, if you take the same set of circumstances without a woman's safety put at risk ( this was my original assumption ) then I totally support what this guy did.

Also, I think this statement is trivializing the right to citizen's arrest...even a "daft gas jockey" should be extended the same rights as other more superior citizens.

It was the customer being in the middle that truly irked me. If this douche thief was armed she could have been a hostage had police arrived before he got out.

On his own at 4am against the munchies bandit, bah, go ahead, play hero, take the risk to your own life and job security (since he was previously warned)

I have no real sympathy for him.

He was an employee first, he disregarded direct instructions from his employer.

You cannot claim to be legally responsible for the store's private property, unless the owner gives you the right. The owner said NOT to do this, thus he has no claim to be acting in defensive of the rightful owner.

I pumped gas as a teen. It was in an era where gas jockeys were being killed far more often than today. It was because we were exposed, worked alone at night, and were full service.

Too many idiots making $4.75 an hour thought they were going to use persuasion and attitude against guys with handguns and sawed off shotguns.

The corporate policies and instructions were clear. Playing a hero when common sense gives you an exit in most cases is preferable.

Had the attendant been killed, there certainly wouldn’t be as many “atta boy” posts would there?

Wow I love when heroes get punished. He got his fellow employee out of harms way and then then rose to the situation. Good on him.
