Yes. Your sarcasm is right on the mark. It's called mitigating circumstances. Just like we should punish people more severely (aggravating circumstances) for things like extreme cruelty and habitual offending. And it's already an accepted part of the system. Didn't work, in this case, because of minimum sentencing though.

People hold on to loved ones out of selfishness. I can't count the number of patients I have looked after in my day who were suffering horrible pain, disfigurement, on feeding tubes and life support systems etc. Who begged nurses daily to end their misery and yet the families held on.. The laws need to be changed, we don't treat animals the way we treat humans. I sure as hell don't want to spend my last days on earth having someone shovel it in one end and cleaning it up on the other and not knowing what planet I am on. And people call that quality of life.. get real!
