Gunnair Gunnair: Harper is appointing a former MNA member of the Parti Québécois. A political party that has more to with the actual secession of Quebec than the Bloc, who merely represents constituents at the federal level. (i.e. the PQ are the ones that can declare and hold a referendum on the issue.)

What gets me is everyone bags on Harper for breaking a promise, but parliment and the provinces are unwilling to work with him so that this change can happen.
I have to ask myself.....Why?
Oh wait so people can bag on him for not doing as he promised....just like most of you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I see someone opened a fresh can of "rightious indignation", along with a fresh batch of red kool-aid.

So who is the bigger fool then? Harper for making a promise he knows he can not keep or you for believing he can deliver? Don't scape goat the provinces for not signing on to this hair brained idea of his. They are only doing what is best for them and would be foolish to relent on a simple promise of some future reciprocity.
If he truly is intent on reform he needs to do more then rule by edict he needs to get the senate and the provinces to sign on and that is a constitutional debate we all know he dare not tread. His plan all along is to short circuit the process so he can say the system doesn't work so he can scrap it. That sort of scorched earth tactics is the true tory hidden agenda which is only barely being held under raps.

..."We're now faced with a very simple choice," Harper said after that furor."Does the government Canadians elected appoint those senators or are they going to be appointed by a coalition that nobody elected?"
These senators have agreed to step down if a better senate selection process is passed. Will the Liberal senators do that?

I'd rather just abolish the Senate, instead of reforming it..
Speaking of reform, electoral reform would be so much more welcomed. (i.e. Single transferable vote).

The funny thing about all of this, is the media never reported about the Senate before. Now, simply because Harper does it, it is unethical and considered a controversy or at least the media sure wants to make it look like it.
This is simply an opinion but it seems that fair is fair.
Either way, there should be a Senate reform. 73 days a year at 100,000 plus, then include all benefits and a full pension. That's pretty cozy considering it is all courtesy of the taxpayers.

Let me see here, on one hand we now have Duffy as a senator instead of ... who was that that was scoping out senate offices a couple weeks ago? Oh ya, Elizabeth May . Even if Harper is being a bit hypocritical by appointing senators the coalition would have done the exact same thing with their cronies so really who are the hypocrites here?
