As noted by the Inspector, " the scooters would be of benefit to beat-cops". I don't think they intend to replace patrol-cops rides! If a 'beat-cop' needed to have a prisoner transported or a moped chased then they would call for a car. Same as they do now.

The whole point of a beat cop is that they get a chance to interact with people in the neighbourhood. Someone on a Segway on steroids would be rather imposing to your average citizen, not to mention the area a beat cop is expected to patrol would be increased in order to maximize the investment. Bicycles do everything this thing does, plus they keep the officer in better physical condition at a fraction of the cost.

You've just described a bike, which is widely used in BC for law enforcement.

Bikes are a way more sensible investment compared to this thing. This is just a rather expensive gimmick.

Just a quick observation though.. I'm guessing these fall into the old person scooter class and I can't really see how they'd be better than bicycles in a crowded downtown.
