ziggy ziggy:
I bet Regina flew on that plane and didnt even know it.

I wonder if they told the passengers before each flight that they were on the Gimli glider.

They tried not to advertise it ;)

I took a flight a couple years later and from the airport window, what do I see but the hull number of the Glider.

We loaded on and as I got there I mentioned it, the male stew at the door said, we try not to let that out..... I told him are you kidding? This plane is bullet proof, it already had its accident that should have made it a smoking hole in the ground.

BartSimpson BartSimpson:
The best flight simulator I know of that USAF guys I know actually like is the "JetFighter" series from JF2 to JF4.

JF5 gets panned because it's heavy on graphics for terrain details and low on action.

I think you need to set the trim tabs to make it fly hands off straight and level. I don't doubt they're not accurate as far as handling goes. I find the graphic hard to view though.....landing on pixels is pretty tough. Falcon 4.0 is supposed to be one of the best all time Sims for jets. Almost too complicated to fly.

MiG-29 fulcrum is what I use, my compy wouldn't be able to handle the latest verion of MS flight sim.

Besides, unless I could fly the version of the arrow with the Iroquois engines in it, it wouldn't be worth the buck. only reason I use MiG-29 is the dogfighting.

Talking about sims.

A few years back, an acquaintance, retired autioneer, a "Battle of Britain RCAF vet" and I were having coffee. Just for the hell of it I brought him home and fired up the computer. He immediately did the "I hate computers" thing---without knowing where it would lead.

I set up MS FCS EE. I explained his diminished vision was not a factor and try it. I set up the MK 9 Spit. I fired it up....and finally got him to hold the FFB stick and open the throttle. He was thrilled. I pulled his gear and he immediately did a snap roll. After a bit of beating up the airfield he pulled the trigger and I showed him the Cannon trigger. He was impressed. Then said "to bad I've nothing to shoot at."

"No problemo" I sez. "How about 4 109s?"

"Gimme a break he sez." I said go for it.

He said---you show me smart guy. which I prceeded to do with him shouting in my ear "break right---break right."

I surrendered the chair and he started out 1 on 1.

He could fly no doubt but as far as air gunnery----no science.

It was up close and personal. Not much deflection. He claimed that's the way they did it.

He spent 3 hours that session and returned many times prior to his passing.

At his funeral, his family made a point of remarking how he loved it.

He experimented with Axis aircraft but was not impressed----he loathed the P47.

Whether his opinions were objective due to his advanced years I cannot say for sure for sure.

One thing he did say that machine guns were preferred and cannon were reserved for point blank---to deliberately kill the pilot---(armour plate behind the seat)....those guys were killers no doubt.

I remember his immense joy at regaining the flying experience. He laughed..."flying with reading glasses....''
