Ever sign your credit card receit badly and still get your purchase without any eyebrows raised?

I have.

On a bet I signed my receipt at dinner as, "Ronald Reagan" and the waiter never checked it and the bill went through just fine.

And I won the bet.

It seems that when you haven't had a real democracy you appreciate it all the more.

In Canada and the USA the ever decreasing voter turnout causes me to worry about the future and if the right to vote will someday be voted away

Nah, you had it the first time. We don't vote because we're content. You can bitch about partisan policies all day (and we do!), but in the grand scheme of things, most policies don't affect most people enough to care.

I take it as a sign that our system works pretty well.

Voters using a mail-in ballot don't have to match their face to an ID.

Go back and read my earlier post. I already covered that one.

What, that several ballots mailed to a single address would raise suspicions? That doesn't follow, either, Bart, because voter cards are mailed to registered voters. It's not like you can ask for spares.

You're not following this, Lily. If you have twenty people registered at a single address then your local registrar will get suspicious and investigate. I'm sure if that number is as little as five people voting absentee at a single address it will garner some attention.

The local registrar will likely assume the family will be away on voting day.

Absentee ballots don't need photo ID, and so far I haven't read anything to lead me to believe the system is being abused. Therefore, I find it unlikely that people are going to round up a bunch of friends to go around from polling station to polling station wearing a different burka in each place to vote as often as possible.

If they try it - we have laws to deal with them.

Call your local registrar and ask if they've ever had to deal with voter fraud. That'll give you an answer.

If you want to hear someone uncontrollably guffaw at you then call the Cook County (Illinois) Clerk's Office (312) 603-0906 and ask them if they've ever had to deal with absentee vote fraud.

I am all for this legislation to ban veiled voting.

In my opinion, it's all a matter of principle.

Mail-in ballots are still allowed though, right?

This is nothing more than political pandering.

Correct me if I am wrong but.... in order to have access to mail ballots, you have to register 1st. By registering, you have to show proof of identity. At least, when I registered they did.

I know, I know, you could argue that the sender could be anyone. I wouldn't know since I always voted at the local office.

Still, it's a matter of common sense. Crap, if we let everyone dictate what they want, we will lose our Canadian values, that's all. We just cannot let in to anyone that whines and wants their own way, only cause it's unfair to them. So I say, it's a good thing that they don't let voters hide their face while voting. These particular people came to Canada, let them adapt.
