There's probably a bigger fear from getting hit with a big bullet than a small one, even if the smaller one technically causes more damage due to it's design. Short of something as big as a deer slug I'd rather get hit with the 7.62. Better a thru-and-thru wound than one stuck inside that tumbled and chewed stuff up before it stopped.

I believe even Russian standard issue AK is now 5.56.
The AK-74 uses a smaller 5.45×39mm cartridge, replacing the 7.62×39mm chambering of earlier Kalashnikov-pattern weapons.
