The background is though that the Russians kind of earned this response with their activities in the Caucasus regions. They've been oppressing and murdering the folks living their for centuries. Christ, the fucking Sochi Games are being held in the capital of Circassia, where the Czarists conducted an ethnic cleanse/genocide against the locals back in the late 19th century. And a hundred odd years later they repeated the same appalling behaviour in Chechnya.
