PublicAnimalNo9 PublicAnimalNo9:
Ok so let me see if I have this straight. Our CANADIAN census information is actually collected by a foreign firm. Not just that, but a foreign firm whose primary source of business is developing and building military aircraft.

Is this a national 'Just for Laughs, GAGS' bit [?]

Please, someone tell me it is.

Nope. It's the truth. Stats Canada was actually going to contract Lockheed Martin employees to go door to door and collect, then collate the data before submitting it to the Government. A large number of protests ocurred, and they backed down, instead using Lockheed Martin's software and contracting them for print services.

They still use LM's software, and they claim it's on a secure network that isn't connected to any outside network.

Why didn't they just use a drone?

This should NEVER have reached a court. Some Stats-Can incompetent needs to go to re-education camp, out in the desert.

Given that so many Canadians side with the Democrats down here in the arguments about Obamacare being 'settled law' I imagine that you'll find yourself in the minority. It would follow that these same statists would throw their grandmothers into a wood chipper if Parliament passed a law saying that this was supposed to happen.

Look at my signature for the quote from Stanley Milgram. He noted an unusual component of the Canadian character was to comply with authority even in circumstances where such compliance would cause the (perceived) death of an unseen individual.

Don't get me wrong, Milgram's experiments showed that most Americans would have made acceptable guards at German death camps but he also noted that Americans were more likely to defy authority on moral grounds than were Europeans or Canadians.

His studies were and remain controversial because the results have been shown to be repeatable in other studies and because those results lay bare some uncomfortable truths about human nature and the dangers of blind compliance with authority.

In the case of this woman all that should occur here is a bit of common sense where a census worker could fill in the form on her behalf and be done with it. The US Census Bureau permits their workers to do the same because every ten years there's several million people who refuse to fill out those forms.

This has nothing to do with delivering a ostensibly fatal shock to someone sitting in another room. Why must you always turn a policy debate into a ridiculous life-and-death violent analogy?

Most Canadians would throw their grandmothers into a woodchipper? I mean really?

Not every policy discussion has to involve reopening the Nazi death camps or gang rape or gruesomely murdering our families.

Sadly, that is the case in his world...

Thank God I don't live in Sacramento - it sounds worse than Mogadishu!

Full Acquittal!

$1:
Toronto judge has found an 89-year-old woman who refused to fill out the 2011 census not guilty of violating the Statistics Act.

Audrey Tobias decided not to complete government survey because it’s processed using software from U.S. military contractor Lockheed Martin.

Tobias has told court that she was a member of the Women's Royal Canadian Naval Service during the Second World War. She said she became a peace activist after watching war film footage, including the detonation of atomic bombs in Japan.

It shouldn't have gone to court. She should have filled out the census in the first place like the other 35 million of us did. Seeing as it did go to court, she should have been found guilty of breaking the law. You can't just decide when and where to abide or not abide by the law when you see fit.

Actually, that is a Citizen's duty. Unjust laws must be openly broken.

How is filling out a census an unjust law? It's not something any of us should think twice about. Unless of course you are wearing a tinfoil crown, and have detected an incoming conspiracy on the shiny metal channels.

Seriously man.

If people want to worry about information being collected, take a gander at those little black boxes the insurance companies want to put in your vehicles.

I didn't say it was unjust, just the opposite. You said people don't get to pick and choose what laws we obey. I disagree. Rosa Parks, Ghandi, Martin Luther - also agree with me. Dismissing me as a 'foiler' doesn't change the fact that anyone not willing to engage in civil disobedience to change the unjust into the just deserves the society they end up with.

And there will never be one of those data collection units in my vehicles.

But it makes it so much easier if they know where you are all the time.

Out of curiosity what kind of vehicles do you own?
