The bill was for the sum total of what the city has charged us residents of Winnipeg for that water.

But why now?

That's not part of the 100 year old agreement, so why are they charging now?

Because of Centreport, and because the city wants to bring water and waste services to the R.M. of Rosser, and the R.M. of West St. Paul. That's not part of the 100 year old agreement.

This is why the natives have little to no respect around Canada. They bargain like children.

So the government does something "wrong" and they do something wrong in return? They negotiate like children and wonder why they get no respect.

I think you and I would agree that agreements made 100 years ago are often far outdated and why would the natives want to withhold clean drinking water from anyone?

This isn't about principle or the health of the water, this is about some vague outrage at an agreement in the hopes they can get a few extra dollars.

Their intentions were clear right from the start if you claim they sent a bill after these plans were brought forth. It's not about principle, it's about all the all mighty dollar.

So people in those areas today can't have water and sewer services EVER because of a 100 year-old agreement? Typical Native logic in a nutshell.

People in those other areas, are literally sitting on a gold mine, so we can have water. Those greedy buggers.

Toss them an extra $100 million and watch how fast their "moral" opposition to the devious plans of whitey disappear. It's like a modern-day version of how Cosa Nostra set up their early rackets. The only ones who are more full of shit than the Natives are the dickheaded white liberals who keep falling for their nonsensical propaganda.

People are living on the water?

In the article you posted, it says the gold is under the lake which is why they won't mine it as it will affect the quality of the water.

So you agree with Gunnair. They should join Canada in pursuit of the capitalist dream. They should start mining gold, or seek royalties on the revenue we generate exploiting their water resources. Or spiral into oblivion. Oh, no.. Irrelevance I think it was.

Does this lake belong to them? If so, they could charge for the water. If not, fuck off.

Yes.

Assimilate with the rest of Canada. Stop ignoring the problems within your community and get on with life.

The way they're trying to live doesn't work nor will it work in the future. Time for them to realize this and move on.

And so what is the City of Winnipeg supposed to do for water once they do that?

They don't own the lake.

What's funny is that the article contradicts itself.

On one hand, it says:

$1:
Redsky's affidavit said the aqueduct has curtailed the community's economic development.

then says:

$1:
Mandamin said his community does not want to damage Winnipeg's economy, but wants to ensure theirs can develop, too

They've already admitted, 100 years later, that the project hurt their 'economy'...and now they say that taking more water will somehow prevent their 'economy' from growing? It makes no sense at all.

I was on a reserve with 250 people and their 'economy' consisted of a variety store and a guy who sold ice cream. Taking more water from our local lake wasn't going to mean the two stores had to close down.

Hurt the economy how? Its a chunk of stone and metal on a shoreline. What exactly is is ruining? If anything those who have to venture there to work on it pump money into the economy. I'd like to see (non fanciful) examples of how its ruined the economy before I treat this more than mere talking out their asses.

Wada already mentioned my solution "Just take it and be consistent with the rest of North America."
