You must not be aware. "Shit Rat" is a term used by police officers when they speak about average "civilians." When it's only cops by themselves around... wink..wink.

I've been called a shit rat twice to my face. First time I was working on a picker truck as a swamper when I was 16 years of age. The guy I was working with was a volunteer R.C.M.P. He liked to play dress-up, I guess. He was a known theif in my town. He'd rip off car parts from parked vehicles. It was quite funny. So he asks me one time, "What do you do for fun?" I say, "The usual, go out ATVing and rip it up on the weekends." He says, "Oh, you're just a shit rat then." I'm like, "Huh?"

Second time being called a shit rat... I found a wallet outside of a gas station and it was filled with ID. So I bring it to the cop shop. Female officer strikes up a conversation that lasts about forty minutes. (I must have smelled pretty) Then she asks, "What do you do for a living?" I tell her, "I work in the patch." She's like, "Oh, you're a shit rat." Conversation over...
